Chef Bobon Santoso finally embraced Islam after going through a quite long process. Bobon's desire to convert had actually existed since two years ago, but it only materialized spontaneously on March 10, 2025, at An-Nikmah Mosque, Citra Grand Cibubur.
"Yes, two years ago Bobon also WhatsApped me, asking how to convert to Islam," said Ustaz Derry when contacted by media via phone on Thursday (13/3/2025).
According to Ustaz Derry, Bobon has had an interest in Islam for a long time. In fact, Bobon's way of speaking, which often includes phrases like "Ya Allah" and "InsyaAllah," indicates that Bobon's heart has been close to the teachings of Islam.
"Just take a look, he often says 'Ya Allah', 'InsyaAllah'. He is already very fluent, his speech is like a Muslim," explained Ustaz Derry.
The process of Bobon becoming a convert happened without any plans. At that time, Bobon and Ustaz Derry were just planning to cook together. However, in that moment, Bobon felt he received guidance and immediately expressed his intention to embrace Islam.
"There was no plan to convert Bobon. Just because he said he was waiting for guidance, if today Allah gives guidance, why not," said Ustaz Derry.
When Bobon recited the shahada, his wife apparently did not know about the decision. However, Ustaz Derry ensured that his wife did not have any issues with Bobon's decision. "She really didn't know, there's no problem. Now Bobon keeps posting verses and hadiths, right," he revealed.
Regarding Bobon's habits that have sparked controversy, such as drinking alcoholic beverages, Ustaz Derry believes that this does not invalidate someone's Islam.
"Even though drinking alcohol or whatever does not invalidate someone's Islam. Many Muslims have been drinking since birth, but gradually they come to understand that it is forbidden and then they will leave it," he explained.
Moreover, Ustaz Derry is confident that Bobon will become a good Muslim over time. He emphasizes the importance of the process in deepening one's faith.
"If someone converts to Islam and is immediately told this is not allowed, that is not allowed, they won't want to convert to Islam, brother," Ustaz Derry asserted.
Regarding his wife, Ustaz Derry hopes that his wife will also follow in Bobon's footsteps and convert to Islam. "Just pray that she will log in soon, just pray," he said.
