Chef Renatta Moeloek Once Became a Victim of an Exploding Gas Fire, Almost Couldn't Go to Cooking School

Chef Arnold also read out some questions from netizens. One of them was a unique question about whether a chef can also get splashed with oil in the kitchen. Chef Arnold then said that Renatta not only got splashed with oil but also caught fire. He then asked the beautiful chef to tell the story of the incident when Renatta was only 18 years old.

"So many people think, 'Oh, there's a burn mark? It must be from work,' no. I was in an apartment. Basically, everything covered by pants was safe. From here (right arm to stomach), the entire body was affected. Luckily, it was only on the right side," said Chef Renatta as she began her story.

"But it's very very memorable. Not traumatized seeing fire and stove. But if there's a gas leak, the smell of gas only, surely stepping back. Instead, now more careful with gas," he explained.

2. Almost Unable to Go to School

The incident did not leave trauma, but it almost made him fail to study cooking in France. Fortunately, Chef Renatta was still given the opportunity to go to school there after recovering from his burn injuries.

"At that time, I was about to go to Paris, about to take culinary school. I have applied, it should have started early in the year. Then I had an accident. It was a drama at that time because I couldn't ask to withdraw from school. Once you're in, you have to go, if not, you're out. We persuaded until the doctor issued a letter, until there were progress reports on how the healing process was going, until the photos were sent to the school, so they would understand. Then they understood. So when I entered the school, the teachers there knew, 'Oh, this is the kid who had a fire yesterday,'" he said.

3. What Causes Stress

Chef Arnold asked if it was one of the lowest moments in Renatta's life. Instead of feeling like her culinary career had failed, Chef Renatta actually experienced a different kind of stress while being treated for burns.

"What made me stressed was being in the hospital. Not because of my career or my life at all. But when you get burned, you're admitted to the isolation building of the hospital. So I was in a room with a dozen other burn victims. So if you're there for months, every day you wake up to the sound of someone screaming while their bandages are being changed, someone crying. The person next to me had a face that couldn't be seen, and she was crying because she had just gotten engaged and was afraid of being left. So it's the depression of the place," she said.
