Comedian Alfiansyah Bustami, also known as Komeng, tells the story of how he started using bizarre photos on ballot papers for the election of members of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) in West Java. The 53-year-old man said he took the photo himself using the camera on his mobile phone.

"I took that photo myself, I took a selfie while warming up my car, then I asked my assistant to print it, and I brought it to Bandung," said Komeng when met in the Kapten Tendean area, Mampang, South Jakarta, on Friday (16/2/2024).

After arriving, Komeng immediately handed over the photo to the KPU officers who were there. After receiving the photo, Komeng asked if he could use it or not.

"I gave the photo, the KPU person laughed, then I asked if it was allowed or not. If there is no prohibition, then it's allowed," said Komeng.

The KPU officer asked if Komeng was sure he wanted to use that photo or replace it. However, Komeng admitted that he was already sure to use it as the photo displayed on the ballot.

"When I wanted to go, they asked again 'is this true?' So I asked if it was prohibited? If not, then I would use that photo," he said.

Before deciding to use that photo, Komeng admitted that he had asked the KPU employee about the photo that should be displayed on the ballot. However, Komeng didn't have any other ideas, so he decided to give a photo that he thought reflected himself as a comedian.

"Regarding the photo, KPU asked for traditional attire or something distinctive. But what traditional attire should I wear? What is the tradition of a little child who always cries? Oh well, I have a photo of that," said Komeng.

In addition, Komeng wants to be different from most people who show good and neat photos. But, Komeng denies that displaying eccentric photos is a strategy he does

"Actually, I just want to be different, there is no specific strategy. People say this is a marketing strategy, but I don't understand that," explained Komeng.

Moreover, Komeng is running as an independent candidate and has never campaigned before. He even does not put up many posters like other candidates do.

"I don't understand campaigning, that's why I never campaign. If I give a speech, would you believe it? That's how it is. That's why I don't have anything, don't understand anything, just bring a vision and mission to improve art and culture," Komeng concluded.
