Experiencing Culture Shock, Oki Setiana Dewi's Children Manage to Adapt - Comfortable in Egypt

Deciding to bring her four children to live in Egypt, Oki Setiana Dewi does not deny that her children experienced culture shock. According to her, there were several things that surprised her children at the beginning of their move.

One of the main issues was the traffic conditions in the Land of the Pyramids, which are quite different from Indonesia. "The children were shocked the first week regarding traffic," said Oki Setiana Dewi when met in the Kapten Tendean area, Mampang, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (15/7/2025).

This challenge made her extra cautious and taught her children to always be careful, especially when crossing the street. "It means there are many accidents, so you have to be really careful when crossing," she continued.

In addition to traffic, the high intonation style of speech among the Egyptian people also poses a unique challenge for her children.

"Secondly, the children were quite shocked by the high speech style in Egypt," said the 36-year-old woman.

Initially, the children thought that the people around them were angry. However, Oki patiently explained that this is a common communication style there.

"So the children thought it was 'very fierce', they just told them that’s how the speaking style is," she said.

Although they experienced difficulties at first, Oki is grateful that her children have now adapted well. "Thank God they are used to it now," she added.

She added that although she was initially surprised, her children are happy living in Egypt because of the easy access to pursue their hobbies, especially in sports.

"I see the kids happy in Egypt, because I see that sports are very easy in Egypt," she concluded.
