Madara actually had a complicated relationship with the Senju clan. As a young man, Madara was initially friends with Hashirama, and the two shared the same dream of creating a peaceful world.

Madara was one of the first Uchiha to awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan. This granted him the power to use strong techniques such as Susano'o and the ability to control the Kyuubi (Nine-Tails).

Madara successfully attained relative immortality through the awakening of Rinnegan. With Rinnegan, he is able to use techniques such as Rinne Tensei and even free himself from death.
