Afgan revealed that his decision to become a singer was greatly influenced by the late Chrisye. This inspiration then led him to collaborate again with Erwin Gutawa for the "Retrospective" concert on July 18.

For Afgan, Chrisye's songs have a magical power that he wants to bring back in his concert. He wants to provide a deep experience for the audience, just as he felt when watching the legend's concert back in the day.

"I am a true fan of Chrisye. I remember his music, I saw it on TV. I immediately told myself that when I grow up, I want to be a singer. So why am I interested in becoming a singer? It's because of Chrisye," said Afgan when met in the Senayan area, Jakarta, Wednesday (13/5/2026).

"That's why when I want to create a song, I think of Uncle Erwin, because he is the one who made the music for Chrisye's songs," added Afgan.

In this concert, Afgan will also face a significant challenge by combining different music genres. He plans to bring his R&B and Hip Hop music era into a grand orchestral arrangement.

"There might be one era in my career where I shift gears to release a full album in English and its music is R&B. That is what we will showcase as well. This is also a challenge to see how hip hop R&B can blend with an orchestra," said Afgan.

Erwin Gutawa himself sees a similarity between Afgan and the late Chrisye in terms of the relevance of songs in society. He feels challenged to support one of Indonesia's best singers today in a complete repertoire.

"I was close to the late Chrisye. I see that Afgan has similarities with Chrisye. His songs are liked by all ages. His songs are relatable. Chrisye was already very big, and I believe Afgan will also become very big," said Erwin Gutawa.

From the initial list of 50 songs, the team finally curated around 30 songs that will be performed during the concert duration. Some songs will be combined into a single narrative to depict Afgan's career journey as a whole.

"There are several songs combined into one cohesive story. I will duet with someone, we will sing a medley as one cohesive story and create a new song," concluded Afgan.
