Famous director Joko Anwar is ready to release his latest film titled SIKSA KUBUR. This religious horror genre features Reza Rahadian, Faradina Mufti, and Christine Hakim.
In order to make SIKSA KUBUR his tenth film, Joko made a big decision for his career. He daringly left behind a Hollywood-scale project.
"So at the end of last year, I rejected (directing) a Hollywood film to make SIKSA KUBUR. That's why the shooting schedule is moved to 2023 for release in 2024," said Joko in his office in Cipete, South Jakarta, on Monday (4/3/2024).
Joko Anwar said that he initially rejected a Hollywood-scale film project to be worked on in the future. But because the schedule suddenly advanced, Joko chose to make SIKSA KUBUR his tenth film.
"I have several projects in Hollywood, one of which suddenly had to be filmed at the end of last year. At first, I asked the producer for permission to shoot it first, but he reminded me of the promise to make the tenth film. I used to think that I could make a film anytime, but the number ten is romantic," Joko continued.
After the success of the short film SIKSA KUBUR in 2012, Joko Anwar immediately wanted to make the feature-length version. However, Tia Hasibuan as the producer advised him to hold back so that the film would not become an exploitation. Feeling in agreement, Joko promised to make SIKSA KUBUR his tenth film.
"When I said I wanted to make the feature film SIKSA KUBUR, Tia said 'Brother, a film about the grave punishment that is heavily influenced by religion must follow religious teachings and must be done by mature filmmakers. If we as filmmakers are not mature yet, it will end up being exploitative.' And I believe that," he recalled.
"Finally, we decided not to rush. Finally, I promised Tia, after making the film MODUS ANOMALI, I said 'Okay, I will make SIKSA KUBUR my tenth film,'" Joko said.
Previously reported, Joko Anwar is ready to release his latest work titled SIKSA KUBUR. The film, which is said to be a religious horror genre, will be screened in all cinemas in Indonesia during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr.
Joko said that this is the first time his film is being shown to liven up Eid. The production house Come and See Pictures submitted it to Cinema XXI as the exhibitor and it was approved.
