Margarita was found unresponsive in her hotel room in Hong Kong. She was on her way home after attending a birthday celebration in Morocco.

"With a heavy heart, I announce the passing of my mother, Margarita A. Forés. Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more news in due time," wrote Amado in his statement on Instagram.

In 2016, she was crowned Asia’s Best Female Chef by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. In 1997, Forés opened her first restaurant, Cibo, a modern Italian "caffè-paninoteca".
