Portraying the Character of Buya Hamka in His Twilight Years, This is Vino G Bastian's Struggle Using Prosthetics and False Teeth

Kapanlagi.com - Vino G Bastian acts as the famous cleric Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah, also known as Hamka, in the film HAMKA & SITI RAHAM. To bring the character to life as an elderly man, prosthetic make-up was applied to Vino's head and neck.

The application of prosthetics on the face and neck takes hours because it requires attention to detail. Once applied, it cannot be worn for a long time.

"Using prosthetics has its limitations. Prosthetics also have a time limit within a day. The challenge is the air in Indonesia, even when shooting indoors, if there is a slight crack, we have to start over," said Vino when met at CGV Cinemas Grand Indonesia, Thamrin area, Central Jakarta, on Friday (8/12/2023).

1. Wearing Dentures and Contact Lens

Not only using prosthetic makeup to look old, Vino G Bastian also wears dentures and contact lenses. This is to match the physical condition of Buya Hamka at that time.

"In addition to prosthetics, I also wear dentures to support the aging face of Hamka. And I have to wear contact lenses for the eyes because Hamka has cataracts. So it's really complicated," said Vino.

2. Different Prosthetic Makeup According to the Period of Events

The prosthetic makeup applied to Vino G Bastian's face varies according to the period of events. It is adjusted based on the photos of Buya Hamka during his lifetime provided by the family as a reference.

"The use of prosthetic makeup changes in each period based on the photos provided by the family and those available on the internet as research material. Because we are portraying Buya Hamka from his youth to old age," added Fajar Bustomi, the director, on the same occasion.
