Profile of Diding Boneng, from Theater to Warkop to Sad News at Age 76

Kapanlagi.com - The Indonesian film industry is in mourning. Zainal Abidin, an actor affectionately known as Diding Boneng, passed away on Monday (3/8/2026) at the age of 76. He was widely recognized for his long career from the theater stage to iconic roles in the Warkop DKI films.

Born on March 3, 1950, Diding Boneng began his journey in the performing arts from theater, before stepping onto the big screen and television. His theater career started in 1973. As a teenager, he often won theater festivals and collected medals, certificates, and awards. This theater foundation became the basis of his acting technique in later years.

His career captured several important moments in Indonesian film and television during the 1980s to 1990s. He is noted to have started his film journey with Tiga Dara Mencari Cinta, and became more widely known through the series Rumah Masa Depan, which aired from 1984 to 1986.

These television roles preceded his major leap into comedy films with Warkop DKI. The collaboration strengthened his image as a fresh character actor remembered by the audience.

Some of the titles he starred in include Godain Kita Dong (1989), Lupa Aturan Main (1990), Mana Bisa Tahan (1990), Bebas Aturan Main (1991), Bisa Naik Bisa Turun (1991), Sudah Pasti Tahan (1991), Masuk Kena Keluar Kena (1992), Bagi-Bagi Dong (1993), and Pencet Sana Pencet Sini (1994).

“I’m not being arrogant, okay? I said earlier, I’ve never participated in casting, including with Warkop. Suddenly the production company of Warkop, Soraya at that time called me. I was asked to come to the Soraya Film office. There I met Warkop. I was invited to play,” said Boneng, in an exclusive interview with Kapanlagi.com in 2018.

1. Still Actively Serving in the World of Performing Arts

Entering the 2000s, Diding Boneng's involvement in films and soap operas became less frequent. According to records on Wikipedia, the titles he starred in over the last two decades include Ngebut Kawin, Kabayan Jadi Milyuner, KKN di Desa Penari, Badarawuhi di Desa Penari, and The Torture: Beranak dalam Kubur.

Although he did not appear on screen often, he remained active in dedicating himself to the performing arts by teaching theater. He was noted to regularly train at the Great Theater Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) until a few years ago.

â��I am here every day. I also teach theater. I have been selected twice as the best actor. Best director three times. On a daily basis, I do more theater even if it doesn’t always involve practice, sometimes discussions. Most of the time, I read books or during practice hours, I practice,â�� said Boneng.

On the same occasion, he compared acting characters on stage and in films, touching on the casting process and the depth of role exploration.

â��In theater, we don’t look at beauty, ugliness, handsomeness, whether someone is popular or not; we don’t see that. Whoever can take on this role or can prove that they are ready to perform this role, please, anyone. In film, it’s different; there are commercial measures. That’s why it’s very different, very much so. Film and theater are the same, both talk about casting. But, the depth or exploring the character deeply, I’m not sure if that’s the case in film,â�� he said.

2. News from the Last Year

In December 2025, unfortunate news came when Diding Boneng's house in Matraman Dalam 2, Menteng District, Central Jakarta, collapsed. Severe damage occurred in the middle to the back of the building. At the time of the incident, he was not at the location. He learned about the condition of his house after finding his family in a hysterical state. He believed the cause was the building's age.

�If I think about it, this house has indeed been decaying for a long time and has never been upgraded. So maybe this is the final point of its decay,� he said when met by the Liputan6.com team.

Two months after the disaster, he was rushed to the hospital due to an asthma attack, a health issue he had suffered from for a long time. After a series of health tests, the sad news of Diding Boneng's passing was announced on Monday (3/8/2026).

The announcement of Diding Boneng's departure was first posted by the Instagram account Sanggar Perkasa, which had a close relationship with the deceased.
