Kapanlagi.com - Renowned photographer Rio Motret disagrees with the notion that beauty pageants should be abolished. It is known that this is a consequence of the body checking incident involving the finalists of Miss Universe Indonesia 2023.
"No. According to me, beauty pageants are something to be proud of for Indonesia," said Rio Motret when met in Tendean area, South Jakarta, on Thursday (10/8/2023).
"Because their representatives will compete internationally and represent Indonesia," Rio continued.
Rio Motret also stated that he disagrees if the body checking incident that occurred in Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 is associated with the beauty pageant as a whole.
"So don't generalize everything because of one party's mistake. Because in other beauty pageants, this case has never happened before, this is the first time,"
Rio also mentioned that the body checking procedure in Miss Universe Indonesia is strictly regulated. Body checks can only be conducted by competent individuals of the same gender, and usually done one-on-one.
"Body checks in beauty pageants are normal, they exist. But they are not conducted in public places, they are done in private rooms, without CCTV, and carried out by competent individuals of the same gender. And usually, it's one-on-one," said Rio.
"This was done in a room made of partitions, and there could be 6 - 10 people in that room. And some of them were male. Maybe after the grand final, these finalists reconsidered the incident from yesterday, they felt uncomfortable," Rio concluded.
It is known that the body checking incident that occurred in Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 has garnered public attention and received a lot of criticism. Some parties consider body checks to be a form of sexual harassment and inappropriate for a beauty pageant.
