Samuel Wongso, The Secret Story of Wong Hang Tailor's Success

Kapanlagi.com - Since its establishment in 1933, Wang Hang tailor has now entered its fourth generation, and Wong Hang's suits are highly sought after. In his portfolio, Wong Hang's works are widely used by officials, entrepreneurs, and celebrities.

The long journey of Wang Hang tailor began in a house on Pahlawan Street, Surabaya, and was then continued by his eldest son, Wongso Soebroto. Wong Hang passed away in 1983. It was then continued by Peter Wongso, the third generation.

Peter paved the way for Wang Hang's expansion to Jakarta by opening branches in Mangga Besar, Pondok Indah, Kelapa Gading, Grand Indonesia, Green Lake City, and Gading Serpong. Not satisfied, Wong Hang expanded to other cities such as Bandung, Semarang, Makassar, and Medan.

"The first generation is Wong Hang himself, who came from Guang Dong, China to Surabaya, then continued by the second generation, my grandfather Wongso Soebroto, and the third generation continued by my father. There are 7 brothers (men) who continue the business, and the fourth generation is me and my siblings, while there are still 5 of us," said Samuel Wongso.

1. Experiencing Ups and Downs

Although it has been well-liked from generation to generation, Wong Hang Tailor has experienced ups and downs. Like during the 1998 economic crisis and the current Covid-19 pandemic.

However, Samuel Wongso is grateful that Wong Hang always manages to face challenges and come out of difficult situations. "Because we always strive to provide the best service, such as free alteration, punctuality, a wide selection of fabrics so that there are many choices, and excellent cutting so that all clients feel satisfied when using our services," he said.

2. The Fashion World is Highly Dynamic

Samuel realizes that the fashion world is highly dynamic with constantly changing trends. In response to the challenges of the fourth generation, Samuel Wongso has made a new breakthrough, namely the traveling tailor, an effort to get closer to customers and provide them with more satisfaction that he has been doing for the past two years.

"I am proud to be one of the successors of this Tailor Dynasty, going through ups and downs together with a family that shares the same passion in the world of Fashion Tailoring," said Samuel Wongso.

3. Proud to Continue the Family Business

The actor of A Man Called Ahok, as the fourth generation, is proud to continue the Wongso family business. Now, after 88 years have passed, for the fifth generation, the family does not specifically prepare cadreship.

"It is being considered, but there is definitely no coercion to work in this industry," he said.
