Surya Sahetapy Reveals Ray Sahetapy Converted to Islam at Istiqlal: This Mosque Advocates for the Deaf to Access Islamic Teachings

The passing of Ray Sahetapy not only left a deep sorrow for the family but also became a moment to remember the spiritual journey of the actor. His son, Surya Sahetapy, revealed that Ray embraced Islam at Istiqlal Mosque and was prayed for in the same place before being buried.

"It's interesting because I visited Istiqlal several times and only found out two days ago that I met his ustaz in 1981 who converted my father, and this mosque advocates for deaf people to access Islamic teachings through the deaf," said Surya when met at Tanah Kusir Cemetery, South Jakarta, Friday (4/4/2025).

Istiqlal Mosque is known for actively providing access for deaf congregants, both through sign language interpreters and texts in Indonesian. For Surya, who is deaf, this represents a form of progress in religious inclusion.

"Actually, it's not just Istiqlal Mosque; others also have access to sign language interpreters and Indonesian text so that we who are deaf can access information, including media that educates those who do not understand in order to better support deaf individuals in accessing sign language and Indonesian text," he added.

In his memory, Surya mentioned Ray Sahetapy as a figure who consistently fought for the rights of the deaf, including in terms of worship and understanding religion. His father often reminded him of the importance of equal access for all.

"After graduation, I haven't had the chance to talk about my experience as a lecturer, so I want to share about my master's degree and I remember him saying to fight for the rights of the deaf. So that life can be more comfortable in the future, that was his message," Surya said.

In the midst of the mourning atmosphere, Surya also revealed that Ray had expressed his wish to be buried in Sibowi, Palu, near his parents' grave. However, the final decision is still pending family discussion.

"And I have not yet communicated with the family, but my father once said that he wants to be buried in Sibowi, close to his parents' graves. He also showed me the grave because I had been to Palu and was shown. God willing, he will be buried there," he explained.

Surya himself is now residing in the United States to continue his studies and teach in the field of sign language linguistics and deaf culture. He hopes to continue his father's mission in advocating for the rights of the deaf. "I teach sign language linguistics and also the history of the Deaf, Culture, so my students are all mixed, between hearing people and the Deaf," said Surya.

He emphasized the importance of educating the public so that the deaf community is no longer looked down upon. According to him, equal access to communication is a fundamental aspect that needs to be realized. "So we need to educate properly and correctly, and the idea of creating Theater 7 emerged so that the community understands communication with deaf people," he said.

With the spirit inherited from Ray Sahetapy, Surya hopes that Indonesia can become a more inclusive country that understands the importance of diversity in communication and access to information. Don't forget to check out other news on KapanLagi.com, if not now, when else?
