The passing of Ray Sahetapy not only left a deep sorrow for the family but also became a moment to remember the spiritual journey of the actor. His son, Surya Sahetapy, revealed that Ray embraced Islam at Istiqlal Mosque and was prayed for in the same place before being buried.
"It's interesting because I visited Istiqlal several times and only found out two days ago that I met his ustaz in 1981 who converted my father, and this mosque advocates for deaf people to access Islamic teachings through the deaf," said Surya when met at Tanah Kusir Cemetery, South Jakarta, Friday (4/4/2025).
Istiqlal Mosque is known for actively providing access for deaf congregants, both through sign language interpreters and texts in Indonesian. For Surya, who is deaf, this represents a form of progress in religious inclusion.
"Actually, it's not just Istiqlal Mosque; others also have access to sign language interpreters and Indonesian text so that we who are deaf can access information, including media that educates those who do not understand in order to better support deaf individuals in accessing sign language and Indonesian text," he added.
