The Reason Kirana Larasati Decided to Become a Diver, Started from a Tragedy of Children Trapped in a Cave

Many are curious why Kirana Larasati is so obsessed with the world of diving that she has earned a MURI record. It turns out, this love began from a global event that deeply touched her heart in 2018.

Kirana recounts that she was very inspired by the heroic actions of the divers during the evacuation of 13 children trapped in a cave in Thailand. This event became a turning point for Kirana to leave her comfort zone on screen for a while.

"I follow the news every day and I was inspired at that moment and I thought, I want to be a diver, a cave diver, so that someday I can be useful or save people, like that. A week after that successful rescue, I immediately took a license to dive. Just like that," said Kirana Larasati when met in the Kebayoran Baru area, South Jakarta, on Friday (6/3/2026).

Kirana's journey turned out not to go directly to extreme cave diving. She had to start everything from scratch, starting from recreational level until she finally fell completely in love with the extraordinary marine ecosystem of Indonesia.

"But the journey to become a cave diver turned out to be very long. I had to start from the sea first, had to do recreational diving first. And yes, I did that, over time I fell in love, became focused," explained Kirana Larasati.

"And coincidentally at that time in 2020 during the pandemic, we couldn't go anywhere, couldn't go abroad," she continued.

"We could only be in Indonesia, and fortunately in Indonesia we are lucky, we can dive," explained Kirana Larasati.

Kirana's perseverance yielded very quick results. During the pandemic, she actually spent more time at sea than at home to hone her skills until she reached instructor level.

"In 2020, I was hardly home almost every month, I was always at sea. And all the prices became half price, so I kept going and of course that honed my skills until eventually not long after I became an instructor in a short time," she said again.
