This is the Controversy of Royalties of Piyu, the Legendary Guitarist of Padi Reborn

Satriyo Yudi Wahono, better known as Piyu, is a talented Indonesian musician born in Surabaya on July 15, 1973. He has been active since 1986. Piyu has produced many works in the Indonesian music industry. Amidst his success, the controversy surrounding his royalties has not escaped scrutiny. Read more below!

Piyu is known as the main guitarist in Padi and Padi Reborn. His contribution in creating the musical color of the band, with his ability to play various types of guitars and master different guitar techniques, makes him one of the most renowned guitarists in Indonesia.

Piyu is also the creator of hit songs for Padi. In addition, Piyu has a business in the music field. He owns a recording studio and produces for several bands.

The controversy over royalties involving Piyu from Padi began with Piyu's post on social media at the end of April 2025, where he praised Ari Lasso for being considered to have fulfilled the obligation to pay royalties directly (direct license) in accordance with the Copyright Law No. 28 of 2014.

Piyu questioned the reasons of 29 singers who are part of Vibrasi Suara Indonesia (VISI) for filing a judicial review of the Copyright Law to the Constitutional Court, implying his disagreement with that step.

Piyu's post triggered a reaction from Fadly, the vocalist of Padi Reborn, who is also one of the 29 singers suing VISI. Fadly responded directly in the comments section, inviting Piyu to discuss in person and emphasizing that his struggle is about dignity and justice for singers as performers who feel they have not received fair treatment in the distribution of royalties.

Fadly believes that the current royalty system disproportionately benefits composers and pays little attention to the contributions of singers. This dispute has since attracted public attention as it involves two members of the same band with differing views on the protection of musicians' rights and the distribution of royalties.

Piyu, who is also the Chairman of the All-Indonesian Composers Association (AKSI), emphasizes the importance of respecting the rights of song creators and supports a direct licensing system as a solution for transparency in royalties, while Fadly and VISI advocate for a revision of the law for fairer treatment for singers. Hopefully, this issue finds the best solution.
