Tortured During Interrogation, Ammar Zoni: I Was Told to Hold That Bag

The follow-up trial of the drug case involving Ammar Zoni was held again with the agenda of examining a witness from Salemba Prison. During the trial, Ammar made a shocking statement regarding the interrogation process he experienced in the past.

Ammar responded to the photo evidence presented in the trial with a disappointed tone. He stated that the moment in the photo was taken under inappropriate conditions. According to Ammar, there was pressure he felt when the picture was taken by the relevant parties.

"The condition was after we were interrogated, (after that there was) abuse, you know. After that, we were photographed, you know," said Ammar Zoni at the Central Jakarta District Court on Thursday (19/2/2026).

Furthermore, Ammar explained that in the photo, he was asked to hold a bag that he actually did not know the origin of. He felt that the presence of that photo was very strange if used as strong evidence in this trial.

"And you can see in the photo there are five people, from there I was asked to hold that bag, you know. And I don’t know anything and you can also see in that photo how our faces all looked, right after being tortured," explained Ammar Zoni.

Ammar felt that his position at that time was truly powerless to refuse the order. He also questioned why the photo only showed a few people if the item really belonged to him.

"But if the situation is like it seems that I was indeed asked to hold that bag, you know. Because after that we were all in the cell, we were all put into isolation and we didn't bring anything, you know," said Ammar Zoni.

Jon Mathias as the lawyer emphasized that his client's testimony would be an important point in the defense later. He assessed that Ammar's condition during the interrogation was indeed under great pressure.

"Yes, if that statement is in Ammar's position, he was indeed not in a good state, right? How can he, in a situation where he is about to be punished, of course, he will seek, you know, it's clear that he is in a state of powerlessness," concluded Jon Mathias.
