Netflix and Legendary Entertainment have officially partnered in the production of a live-action My Hero Academia film, with Jason Fusch appointed as the latest screenwriter. Fusch replaces the previous writing team and will collaborate with Shinsuke Sato as the director and creative lead of this project.

Jason Fusch stated that the My Hero Academia film will take inspiration from the horror novel IT by Stephen King from 1986. Both works share some similarities, such as themes of youth, an outcast main character, and the struggle to face fears. "When writing young characters, what I want to emphasize is portraying their emotional honesty," said Fusch in an interview session.

Jason Fusch is known for his involvement in several major projects such as Wonder Woman and Argylle. He is also the co-creator and showrunner of the prequel series to IT, titled Welcome to Derry, which is scheduled to premiere in October 2026. Fusch also explained the similarities between Welcome to Derry and My Hero Academia, "In Welcome to Derry, we see a group of outcast kids trying to fight a demon. In My Hero Academia, we also write about someone who is an outcast like Deku, who has no powers in a world full of superheroes. I think there are indeed some similarities, but there are also very different differences."
