Watch 'Merah Putih: One For All', Hanung Bramantyo Says His Film Is Suitable for Children But Not Yet Ready

Renowned director Hanung Bramantyo has finally satisfied his curiosity by watching the animated film MERAH PUTIH: ONE FOR ALL, which has been showing in theaters since August 14, 2025. After previously giving sharp comments based on its trailer, the husband of Zaskia Adya Mecca felt the need to see the complete work for a fair assessment.

Directly attending the XXI Kemang Village cinema in South Jakarta, this Citra Award-winning director shared his views after watching. According to him, what he witnessed on the big screen actually reinforced his initial suspicion. Hanung Bramantyo firmly stated that this film is not yet worthy of being screened.

For him, this is a work that has been forced to be presented to the public. Hanung feels that what is presented is a product that is not yet mature and still in the early stages of production. He expressed his views further.

"Yes, I had to watch the film because it wouldn't be fair if I only watched the trailer. So I watched it. But indeed, to me, as I suspected, the film is really not finished yet. So I feel that it is being forced, forced to be shown, you know," he said when met in the Kemang area, South Jakarta, Thursday (14/8/2025).

Furthermore, the director of the film AYAT-AYAT CINTA explained that a film that has been screened in theaters is the final statement from its creators. He feels sad if such a result is considered a final statement. Hanung elaborated further on the creators' statements.

"When the film has been screened in theaters, it is the final result that is believed to be a statement. Now, if friends feel that this is your statement, then that is very sad for me because people will be judged by their final results," he said.

According to him, the general audience will not understand the ins and outs of the production process and will only judge based on what they see. He regrets if this unfinished work becomes a bad precedent for the industry. The father of six children stated that only those who understand the film-making process would comprehend the situation.

"The audience will not see, oh this is still in process, this is still in process, still in process. Only I might be able to see that this film is not finished. Eh, it's not finished but it's forced to be screened," he asserted.

From a visual standpoint, Hanung clearly sees that the quality is still very raw, like a pre-visualization or mockup. He provided examples of several scenes that he believes are still far from perfect. The man from Yogyakarta analogizes the process that should occur in animation production.

"Earlier I saw there was, oh, there was interaction between humans and monkeys, right? Oh, that means later I, as an animator, will create a monkey, right? So this is pre-visualization. It means it's still very early, eh, the initial process after the scenario, it should look like this," he explained.

One of the things he paid attention to was the detail on the animal characters that appeared in the film. According to him, these details clearly show that the film is still at a very early stage. He even highlighted small details that looked rough on the big screen.

"But when it comes to the big screen, just now it was very obvious what we call the tail, what, the fur on, what do you call it, on the monkey's tail, it looked very raw. Just like that," he said.

When asked about the rating, Hanung Bramantyo was reluctant to give a number. He reiterated that it is difficult to assess something that is essentially not complete or cannot yet be called a finished film. Therefore, he provided a diplomatic answer. "I said this film is not finished. So if you want to give a rate, then the rate is for something not finished," he said.

Nevertheless, he sees the story being presented may still be suitable for children, but not on the cinema platform. According to him, platforms like YouTube are more appropriate for showcasing content with visual quality like this. This seasoned director also suggested a more suitable medium for screening. "It may be suitable for children but not in cinemas. Maybe on YouTube. Well, on YouTube, that's right. But in cinemas, no," he concluded.
