Young Marriage, The Love Story of Najwa Shihab and Ibrahim Assegaf - Faithful Until Death Separates

Najwa Shihab and Ibrahim Sjarief Assegaf first met at the University of Indonesia campus. At that time, Najwa was a new student and Baim was her senior in the Faculty of Law.

Ibrahim did not want to date Najwa for long. He immediately proposed to Najwa to Quraish Shihab, but Najwa's father set a condition for his future son-in-law. He could marry her as long as he completed his thesis and graduated. Ibrahim agreed to Quraish's request. At that time, Najwa was only 19 years old.

Najwa herself did not immediately accept Ibrahim's proposal. She found clarity in her heart while performing Umrah in the Holy Land of Mecca. In front of the Ka'bah, Najwa performed Salat Istikharah and received an answer there.

This couple then got married in Solo in 1997. Their wedding was held grandly and incorporated several traditions, starting from Bugis, Betawi, and also Javanese customs.

Najwa admitted that she never planned to marry young. "I never had a specific plan to marry young. It just happened because I met the right person, and at that time I thought, if we can be happy now, why should we postpone happiness?" said Najwa.

Marrying when she was only in her third semester, Najwa then continued her studies until she graduated. Four years after getting married, she gave birth to her first son, Izzat. Then, ten years later, Najwa gave birth to her second child, but the baby named Namiyah passed away just a few hours after being born.

This wedding portrait with Ibrahim will now be a sweet memory for Najwa. After 28 years together, Ibrahim left Najwa forever after suffering a stroke and passing away on Tuesday, (20/5).
