Katy Perry is facing a wave of harsh criticism on social media regarding her ongoing world tour. The tour titled Lifetimes began in Mexico City last week, featuring an energetic performance with 24 hit songs.
She is scheduled to bring this tour to Australia in June, with a series of concerts in large arenas that are almost completely sold out.
However, the initial reaction from social media towards this show was largely dominated by criticism. One viral video on TikTok showed Perry performing with a plastic Lightsaber while singing E.T., and netizens quickly mocked the production of this tour, which was deemed cheap.
Harsh comments emerged, ranging from comparing this tour to the completely failed Wonka Experience event in Glasgow, to stating that Perry's appearance on stage looked "bored" and lacking enthusiasm.
Not only that, the use of a video background that is suspected to be AI-generated also drew criticism. In one performance, Perry sang the song Lifetimes in front of images of people who seemed happy, but the audience quickly realized that the images were not recordings of fans, but rather artificially created images.
The use of this AI visual is considered to show a lack of effort and minimal production costs, worsening the negative impression of the overall tour. Perry's half-hearted dance while performing the song Part Of Me further strengthens the negative sentiment on social media.
Amidst the pressure and criticism, Perry was seen crying while performing the song Pearl during a fan request session at one of her concerts. That emotional moment became a highlight and went viral on various platforms.
The last few months have indeed been a difficult time for Perry. Her comeback album, 143, released last September, failed to chart in major markets and quickly disappeared from the radar. Her decision to announce the tour setlist while on a space flight with Blue Origin also received mixed responses.
Nevertheless, fan enthusiasm in Australia remains high. Perry will kick off her concert in Sydney on June 4, and so far, 15 concert dates in five major cities are almost sold out—a good piece of news amidst the trend of declining global concert ticket sales that has also affected other major artists like Beyoncé.
