Tom Cruise Visits Ghibli Museum While Promoting 'MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING' in Japan

This occurred when both were in Japan as part of the promotional tour for the film MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING.

In a photo uploaded by the Instagram account @missionimpossiblejpn on Wednesday (07/05/2025), Tom Cruise and the director appeared to pose casually, leaning slightly while putting one of their hands in their pants pocket. Right behind them, a giant Totoro doll protected by museum glass was also captured by the camera.

The arrival of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie in Japan is not the first indication of a collaborative relationship between the two parties. Previously, the American director had contributed to the screenplay for the film EDGE OF TOMORROW, which was based on the novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The name of the action specialist actor is also listed as one of the cast members of that film.

Outside of their joint project, Tom Cruise has previously acted alongside Japanese actor Ken Watanabe in the film THE LAST SAMURAI. Director Christopher McQuarrie has also occasionally accepted offers from Skydance Media to write and direct the Hollywood live-action adaptation of the anime STAR BLAZERS (SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO).

Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise, and the entire cast of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING attended the premiere of their latest film in Japan on May 6, 2025. According to information on the official Japanese version of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film website, the event took place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office. It was also mentioned that the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, was present at the event.

Quoting from the Anime News Network portal, Governor Yuriko Koike attended and was given the opportunity to officially open the red carpet session for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING. The governor was also seen meeting and shaking hands with Tom Cruise on stage afterwards.

After visiting the Ghibli Museum, Christopher McQuarrie and the star of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise reportedly met with Takashi Yamazaki, a writer who is also responsible as the director for the film GODZILLA MINUS ONE. Their meeting took place at the Shibuya Sky observation deck with a beautiful view of the Shibuya Scramble intersection in Tokyo.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING is the eighth film and a sequel in the 2023 franchise titled DEAD RECKONING PART ONE. The release date for this film has been set for May 23, 2025, in Japan and the United States. The premiere in theaters across the Land of the Rising Sun will begin from May 17 to May 22.
