Actor Fahad Haydra is trusted to portray the character Anies Baswedan in the film SENYUM MANIES LOVE STORY. However, behind his decision to accept this offer, Fahad admitted he was once overwhelmed with fear and confusion.
"Yes, at first I was confused. There was actually some fear too," said Fahad when met at XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, on Monday (6/9/2025). Here are the details.
Fahad's concerns are quite justified. The figure of Anies Baswedan is a public figure widely known by the community. Portraying such a character, he believes, is very vulnerable to judgment and could even lead to unintended political interpretations.
"I am afraid of what I portray as Anies Baswedan, afraid that it might lead to opinions and so on. Or something like that, right? We don't really know, right?" he said.
Fahad emphasized that this film is not made to support any particular political side. The story of SENYUM MANIES LOVE STORY is only inspired by the love story of Anies Baswedan and his wife, Ferry Farhati, during his youth.
"Meanwhile, the film we are making is actually inspired by the story of Anies Baswedan. It is not a film that leans towards a certain realm," Fahad explained.
Fahad's doubts began to fade after participating in the script reading process. He was then reminded that the character he played was not the current version of Anies, but Anies when he was younger. "I was reminded during the reading that the character I am portraying is not the Anies Baswedan that people see now, but Anies Baswedan in the past," Fahad revealed.
With that approach, Fahad will present the figure of Anies Baswedan during his college years in his 20s. He hopes that the audience does not expect to see Anies in the public version they know today.
"Maybe when watching this film, don't expect to see Anies Baswedan as you know him, not the Anies Baswedan that friends know. But this is Anies Baswedan during his college years at age 20," he continued.
SENYUM MANIES LOVE STORY tells the story of young love between Anies (Fahad Haydra) and Ferry Farhati (Kathy Indera) that blossoms during their college years. Both harbor feelings for each other but are too afraid to express them. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters starting June 12, 2025.
