Accepting the Challenge to Work on the Musical Drama 'PENGIN HIJRAH', IKJ Rector Amazed by the Acting of 5th Semester Students

The Jakarta Institute of Arts (IKJ) takes a bold step by accepting the challenge from MBK Productions to work on a large-scale musical drama titled PENGIN HIJRAH. This project serves as proof of the institution's capacity to produce a stage performance that is developed before its film version is released.

During an open rehearsal held at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (6/8/2025), IKJ Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. M. Syamsul Maarif, M.Eng., Dipl., DEA., expressed that this challenge was received with enthusiasm as it provides new opportunities for the institution and its students.

"I think because IKJ has never showcased something like this before, so the challenge presented by MBK, Mr. Budi, and Mas Rendy, I immediately grasped," said the Rector of IKJ.

Furthermore, he explained that this decision was made after discussing with the heads of study programs at IKJ. One of the names trusted to take control as the director is Damar Rizal Marzuki, a young talent from the theater program. "And I discussed with friends at IKJ. Here is Mas Damar, a young man who is certainly very dedicated to realizing this," he continued.

However, what caught the Rector's attention the most was the performance of the students involved, especially the lead actress, Putri Rahel Ardani Budiono. He admitted to being very impressed with Rahel's acting quality, who is still in the early semesters of her studies. "Just in the 4th to 5th semester, and already like that, what about the 8th semester?" he remarked in amazement, greeted by laughter from the audience.

Director Damar Rizal Marzuki confirmed that this project is a rare opportunity that has never been tackled before. He sees this challenge as a momentum to showcase his skills.

"IKJ itself has not had the chance, has not had the time or opportunity to create a musical drama. So, when there was a challenge to create something, I finally dared to create a musical drama," explained Damar.

This performance has become a massive collaboration involving a total of 170 personnel, ranging from students, lecturers, to alumni from various disciplines such as theater arts, music, dance, as well as fashion and interior design. The rehearsal process has also been intensive with a total of 45 meetings to ensure that the performance meets the highest quality standards.

The musical drama PENGIN HIJRAH will be officially staged for the public on August 23-24, 2025, at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki.
