Davina Karamoy Reveals the Differences in Her Character in the Film and Novel 'THE OTHER SIDE'

Kapanlagi.com - The film THE OTHER SIDE, adapted from the novel of the same title by Alya Ranti, will soon be released in theaters. Previously, THE OTHER SIDE was popular on Wattpad because it had been read 13 million times in a year and has now reached 23 million readers.

“At that time, THE OTHER SIDE was published on Wattpad. In a year, it got 13 million reads and became a best-selling novel,” said Alya Ranti during the press screening of THE OTHER SIDE at Plaza Senayan XXI, Central Jakarta, on Friday (11/3).

As a writer, Alya Ranti is very happy that her work has been made into a film by Lingkar Pictures. Although there are some changes in the characters between the novel and the film, she is still satisfied with the result. 

1. The Author Feels Satisfied

“I am very happy with the result of the film and I was involved in the casting process to choose Alea, Revo, and some other actors. There are certainly changes when adapting a novel into a film. Some characters have changed and developed. One of them is the character of Aldi played by Syakir Daulay, who is very funny in the film,” said Alya Ranti.

Director Girry Pratama also stated that the story in the film is not exactly the same as the novel.

“The story is 60 percent different from the novel with Alya's approval. The ending is very different and has never been done by other production houses. We made it like the real world, not artificial,” said Girry Pratama.

2. The Challenge of Playing Alea

Meanwhile, Davina Karamoy, the lead actress, admitted that she was challenged to play the character of Alea, who already has many fans from Wattpad and the novel. However, she tried to give the best result to satisfy the audience.

“The challenge of playing Alea certainly made me nervous because there are so many readers, 23 million on Wattpad, and there are many Alea fans, so I have a full responsibility but that doesn't mean I'm worried. Okay, I have to make this good and satisfy the audience,” said Davina Karamoy.

“This is a teenage character, not too difficult for me. (Character exploration) during reading, for about a week. Before the shooting process, we had a week off. During the break, I built the character and built chemistry too,” she continued.

3. There are Character Differences

As stated by the author, Davina Karamoy also revealed that there are character differences for Alea in the movie and in the novel.

“In the movie, Alea doesn't really pursue Revo and isn't as spoiled as in the movie. In the movie, she's made to be a bit more spoiled and childish, but in the novel, she's not as childish. But Alea also has a strong opinion, especially since she moved to forget her ex. So she really wants to focus on the future,” explained Davina Karamoy.

4. Teenage Love Story

THE OTHER SIDE tells the story of a teenage girl named Alea (Davina Karamoy) who moves from Jakarta to Bandung to forget her ex-boyfriend Reynand (Bryan Andrew) who cheated on her with her own friend.

Then Alea meets Revo (Sandy Pradana) and starts to like him. But as Alea and Revo get closer, Reynand reappears and Reva (Pamela Bowie), Revo's new girlfriend who just returned from England, also appears. What will happen to their love story? Watch it in theaters starting March 17, 2022.
