Desta Cannot Refuse the Honor of Playing Dono from Warkop, Once Wanted to Retire from Acting

Actor and presenter Deddy Mahendra Desta surprisingly returns to the big screen for a major project. After some time away, Desta has been cast to play the legendary character Dono in the latest Warkop DKI film produced by Falcon Pictures. This decision feels special, considering Desta had previously expressed reluctance to return to acting.

Initially, Desta admitted that he was no longer interested in participating in a film project. He felt that his time in the acting world was sufficient and had no plans to accept any offers again. However, a special offer came and changed his mind.

"To be honest, I personally have never wanted to act in films again, actually. Because I don't know, it just feels like enough for me," said Desta when met at the Falcon Pictures office on Friday (14/11/2025).

The call to play Dono also came honorably. Desta recounted that the party who contacted him directly was the family of Indro Warkop. This made him feel flattered and see the offer as a great trust given to him.

"Who could refuse that? Especially Uncle Indro who reached out directly, his child whom I have admired since forever, I mean admired because I am in awe, respect," explained Desta.

Although feeling proud, Desta does not deny the heavy burden he feels. Playing such an iconic character loved by the Indonesian people brings its own pressure. He honestly admits that this role has become a burden, but he turns it into a challenge.

"It's really a burden, to be honest. But that's it, that burden is what becomes a challenge for me, it's just a new challenge," he said.

The heaviest burden, according to Desta, does not come from audience expectations, but from himself. He feels he has to "fight" with himself to be able to deliver a maximum performance and not get caught up in trying to imitate the late Dono too literally.

"The fear is getting trapped in having to be very similar to the late one. But it has to be flexible too. Well, that's just a challenge for me," he stated.

He added that his main challenge is to fight the expectations from within himself.

"So fighting with myself is what I have to battle against, the hardest," concluded Desta. Â
