The creators of THE SHADOW STRAYS attended the 19th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) to share interesting stories about the making of this globally scaled action film. They held a session titled "Reel Life Creator Sharing: Making the Globally Scaled Action Film THE SHADOW STRAYS" on Sunday, December 1, 2024, which attracted the attention of many festival participants.

One of the most captivating topics was the Japanese scene that appears at the beginning of the film. The scene looked very realistic and made the audience wonder if the crew actually filmed in Japan?

It turns out that, although the scene looks like it was shot in the land of cherry blossoms, it was not entirely filmed in Japan. This fact was one of the things revealed by the creators during the session, adding to the uniqueness of the production process of THE SHADOW STRAYS.

1. Shooting Locations in Indonesia

Batara Goempar, Director of Photography of THE SHADOW STRAYS, revealed that the shooting location for Kintaro Tea House, which appears at the beginning of the film, was actually not filmed in Japan, but rather in Indonesia. Although director Timo Tjahjanto had informed his team that filming would take place in Japan, the reality is that all filming locations were done in the homeland.

The outdoor area that looks very "Japanese" in the film was shot in the Gunung Pancar area, Bogor. This is one of the interesting facts behind the making of THE SHADOW STRAYS, where the setting that appears to be Japan was actually filmed in Indonesia.
“The initial (scene) shooting was, if I'm not mistaken, in a parking lot or something like that, then we created the facade and everything from the designs, just needed lighting treatment to get the feel,” explained Batara.

2. A Mature Concept is Important for Creating a Set Like a Real Location

Timo also emphasized that creating concept art before shooting is crucial to realizing the desired visual of the scene.
“From the beginning we knew, okay we can't possibly go to Japan just to shoot like this. So we discussed the concept that we applied is to design as detailed as possible so that we can create the illusion here in Indonesia. Usually with images we can estimate which areas in Indonesia resemble the most, which we can adapt to look like this. That’s the purpose of concept art,” he said.

THE SHADOW STRAYS has been streaming since September 10, 2024, and has successfully entered the Top 10 on Netflix in 85 countries. Have KLovers watched it yet?

3. The Snow is a Combination of Special Effects and Visual Effects

DOP commonly known as Marcel explained that the snow in THE SHADOW STRAYS was created using a combination technique of special effects and visual effects.

Meanwhile, Daiwanne P. Ralie, Co-Producer of THE SHADOW STRAYS, revealed that the snow effects were made using various types of materials to create a more realistic impression.

“For the grains on the ground, we used salt. Then in other areas, we used various materials, from diaper stuffing to foam,” he said to IDN Times at Empire XXI, Yogyakarta, after the event.
Don't forget to watch THE SHADOW STRAYS! If not now, when else?
