Making a Horror Film About Exorcism in Indonesia, Director Bobby Prasetyo Witnesses the Terrifying Process Live

Kapanlagi.com - Director Bobby Prasetyo is once again enlivening the local film industry with a horror offering titled KUASA GELAP. Interestingly, this film takes an unconventional theme about exorcism in the Catholic Church in Indonesia.

Bobby Prasetyo, as the director, admits he was very challenged when he was first offered to direct this film. Because no film about exorcism has been made in Indonesia before.

"When I was invited to talk about this film, the story was very different regarding Catholicism. It was a big challenge for me because it’s not only new for Indonesian horror but also for me. Even from my previous films, none have taken the Catholic Church as a theme," said Bobby when met at Epicentrum XXI, Rasuna Said area, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (25/9/2024).

1. Delayed for Four Years

The production of the film KUASA GELAP has been revealed to be delayed for four years. Bobby Prasetyo is grateful because he could conduct deeper research, including witnessing exorcisms firsthand.

"For this film, I learned from scratch again. Fortunately, because of the four-year delay, the research became extensive. I talked to many priests, attended exorcism seminars, and I really saw the exorcism process not just in one place; it was quite terrifying," said Bobby.

2. The Very Indonesian Horror of Exorcism

Although it is not common for Indonesian society, Bobby Prasetyo wants to introduce exorcism through the film KUASA GELAP. Of course, this horror is still wrapped in strong local wisdom.

"Even though it is an exorcism film, it is made in Indonesia; we cannot deny the influence of Indonesian culture. So from the characterization, whatever it is, it is very Indonesian. In the creation process, since we are Indonesians, it has to feel like it is in Indonesia," emphasized Bobby Prasetyo.
