Synopsis 'TALE OF THE LAND' Shenina Cinnamon Plays a Dayak Girl Trapped in the Trauma of Customary Land Conflict

Set against the exotic backdrop of East Kalimantan, TALE OF THE LAND portrays the story of May (Shenina Cinnamon), a Dayak girl living in a floating house with her grandfather, Tuha (Arswendy Bening Swara), after losing her parents in a customary land conflict. Trauma causes her body to reject stepping on solid ground.

This film is not only about personal wounds but also a social reflection on the struggle of indigenous people to protect their land from the pressures of modernity. Produced by KawanKawan Media, this film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), making it an international highlight.

May, a Dayak girl, lost her parents in a land conflict that robbed her of a sense of security. Her life changed in an instant, leaving deep scars behind.

The trauma made May unable to touch the ground again. Every time she tried, her body collapsed, as if the earth rejected her from standing.

She then lived with her grandfather, Tuha, in a calm floating house on the lake. From a distance, she could only gaze at the land with a trembling heart.

The water surrounding her became both a fortress and a prison. May lived in constant fear, isolated from the land she once called home.

Shadows of the past continued to haunt her, especially the death of her parents. Every time those memories surfaced, she found herself trapped again in profound grief.

However, behind that fear, there is a desire to be free. May wants to stand tall again, challenging the trauma that has bound her steps all this time.

Directed by Tin Siu, this film is born from the anxiety about the loss of ancestral land. Through May's story, it aims to voice the memories, identities, and collective wounds experienced by the Dayak community.
