The Story of Rio Dewanto & Faradina Mufti Passing Down Tales to Their Children, from Stories of Prophets to Politics

Being involved in a film adapted from folklore, DARK LEGEND OF MALIN KUNDANG, has made Rio Dewanto and Faradina Mufti reflect on the importance of fairy tales and legends for the current generation. As parents, they each have their unique ways of passing down the culture of storytelling to their children.

When met during the release of the trailer for his latest film in the Cipete area, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (01/10/2025), Rio Dewanto admitted to having a special tradition of reading books to his daughter, Salma Jihane Putri Dewanto, every night before bedtime.

Interestingly, Salma's reading, who is now 8 years old, is not limited to children's fiction. Rio revealed that his daughter is now actually interested in more serious topics.

“As for me, almost every night before she sleeps, I still read books to her until now. But because of her age, now that she is 8 years old, she ends up reading books about politics, economics, but for children, I swear. And she likes it, she enjoys it,” Rio said.

Although her reading has expanded, Rio admitted that he still reads various fairy tales and folk stories since his daughter was little. “From Malin Kundang, to prophets, basically all sorts of things,” he added.

A similar tradition is also applied by Faradina Mufti to her three children. “Well, my children are listeners. So they immediately get into it and can, they can imagine the scenes. They kind of picture it, ‘Oh, is that how it is, Dad? Oh, is that how it is?’” Faradina explained.

He hopes that this habit can cultivate his children's love for literacy. “It's fun, I hope it always exists, that love is always there in them until they grow up. I hope we can break that cycle and get the kids accustomed to reading and writing manually again,” he hopes.

Meanwhile, when asked about the film LEGEND OF MALIN KUNDANG, both of them unanimously stated that this film is intended for adult viewers. Rio even explained to his daughter that the film he starred in this time is not suitable for children.

“My child, because from the beginning I’ve said, yes, she knows I’m in the film Malin Kundang, but this is indeed not a film that can be watched by children, because the content is quite mature,” Rio concluded.
