Yunita Siregar Reveals Challenges of Playing an Antagonist Character in the Horror Film 'KITAB SIJJIN & ILLIYYIN'

To delve into Yuli's character, Yunita did not work alone. She had many discussions with the director, Hadrah Daeng Ratu, to understand the intricacies of the character. They collaborated in building the emotional transitions and changes in Yuli's character to the fullest.

"And of course, with Bu Hadrah's help, we both looked for how Yuli's character would be portrayed, how maximal the switching would be, we mapped out the graph," explained Yunita.

In addition, Yunita also conducted research by watching several films that feature characters with significant changes. This method helped her gain a clearer picture of how to portray a character experiencing inner transformation. She also used journaling techniques to help her understand the trauma experienced by Yuli.

"I also watched several film references where the characters undergo significant changes, that's one of my ways and journaling also helps me quite a bit when I start shooting, it serves as a reminder of the traumas that Yuli experiences until she has that 'good' thought," she said.

While exploring Yuli's character, Yunita gained a valuable lesson about how heartbreak can change a person. She realized that traumatic experiences can drive someone to do unexpected things. According to her, Yuli's response to heartbreak is a very human thing.

"What I found out is that indeed someone's heartbreak can turn a person into a monster, and I think that's very human," she stated.

In fact, Yunita had a view that Yuli's actions, although wrong, could be understood from the perspective of her character. She felt empathy for Yuli's motivation for revenge, especially if the loved one also felt the impact. 

"Maybe if some people think about being Yuli, it might not be wrong either, right? Oh, is it wrong? Hahahaha because it feels like if we are the ones who are hurt, we might still be able to face it, but if it involves a loved one, it feels like there is that desire for revenge," said Yunita.

The film Kitab Sijjin & Illiyyin is scheduled to be released simultaneously in Indonesian cinemas starting July 17, 2025. In addition to Yunita Siregar, this film also stars several familiar names in the film industry. The lineup of actors and actresses who contribute to this film includes Tarra Budiman, Dinda Kanyadewi, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Kawai Labiba, Sultan Hamonangan, and Septian Dwi Cahyo.
