As the 2025 Oscars ceremony approaches, set to take place on March 3, 2025, EMILIA PEREZ has become one of the most talked-about films in the film industry with the highest number of nominations, totaling 13. This number of nominations surpasses THE BRUTALIST and WICKED, each with 10 nominations.
EMILIA PÉREZ is a Spanish-language musical crime film directed by Jacques Audiard and released in 2024. The film tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader, played by Karla Sofía Gascón, who collaborates with a lawyer, played by Zoe Saldaña, to disappear and undergo a transition into a woman. In addition to Gascón and Saldaña, the film also stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez.
This film is set in Mexico with Mexican characters, but the entire shooting was done in a studio in Paris, France, and the only main Mexican actor in this film is Adriana Paz.
Although this film is titled Emilia Pérez, the character Rita, played by Zoe Saldaña, has more screentime than the main character played by Karla Sofía Gascón.
Just like her character in the film, Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón is a transgender woman in real life. This is the first film she stars in as an actress after announcing her transition in 2018. Previously, she had a long career as a male actor in Spain and particularly in Mexico, often appearing in soap operas.
At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Perez received a 9-minute standing ovation at the end of its screening, making it the second longest standing ovation for a Jacques Audiard film at Cannes, after RUST AND BONE (2012), which received a 10-minute standing ovation.
At the 2024 Cannes event, actresses Adriana Paz and Karla Sofía Gascón shared the award in the Best Actress category. This victory makes Adriana Paz the first Mexican actress to win this award, and Karla Sofía Gascón the first transgender actor to win an acting award at Cannes.
