After the huge success of his film Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder will collaborate with Netflix. His upcoming project, Rebel Moon, is expected to be an epic work in two parts with spin-off potential. Zack Snyder originally planned Rebel Moon as a Star Wars film. He proposed REBEL MOON as a more sophisticated interpretation of George Lucas' world. However, after Walt Disney Co. acquired LucasFilm in 2012, the concept was abandoned.

REBEL MOON is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of a distant galaxy, marking a slight shift for Zack Snyder into a different sci-fi subgenre. The forces of the ruler Regent Balisarius threaten the existence of the once peaceful colony. The colonists send a young messenger rider named Kora, who has a troubled past, to seek help from various warriors from nearby planets in an effort to withstand the forces of Regent Balisarius. Kora, the main protagonist of Rebel Moon, will be played by Sofia Boutella. Sofia is an actor, model, and dancer from Algeria and has previously starred in several blockbuster films such as The Mummy (2017), Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), and Atomic Blonde (2017).

Charlie Hunnam takes on the role of Kai, a mercenary pilot who will be one of Kora's close friends. Charlie has previously appeared in Pacific Rim (2013), The Gentleman (2019), and Crimson Peak (2015).

Nemesis will be played by Doona Bae, a cyborg sword expert with a mechanical hand that allows her to swing weapons made of liquid metal. Doona Bae started her career in South Korea as a model before being chosen for the lead role in the film Barking Dogs Never Bite, directed by Bong Joon-ho.

Ed Skrein will portray the main antagonist character in Rebel Moon, an evil enforcer of the Empire named Atticus Noble. Ed has previously appeared in films such as Deadpool (2016), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), and Midway (2019).

Accompanying Kora on her adventure is Gunnar, a Veldt farmer who will be portrayed by Michiel Huisman. Michiel has starred in films such as Echo 3 (2022), Game of Thrones, and The Haunting of Hill House.
