Before 'The Nun 2', Here's the Order of Films in The Conjuring Universe That Can Be Watched - All of Them Make You Unable to Sleep!

Everyone must be familiar with the horror films from The Conjuring Universe, since 2013 these films have been the most popular horror films that continue to develop their stories.

THE NUN 2 which is part of The Conjuring Universe is known to have been released in theaters on September 6, 2023. THE NUN 2 will continue the story from THE NUN (2018) which takes place 4 years after the events in Saint Cartha, Romania, still with the terror of Valak who remains in the body of Maurice alias Frenchie.

It all started with the release of THE CONJURING (2013) and then two other sequels that tell the various experiences of the Warren family, a couple who investigate paranormal activities in the 1960s. Well, the films ANNABELLE and THE NUN that were released afterwards become the origin stories of the demons haunting the Warren family. These horror films distributed by Warner Bros were released not in accordance with the chronological order of events.

Without further ado, let's take a look at the chronological order of James Wan's films, The Conjuring Universe.

1. THE NUN (2018)

THE NUN is set in 1952 in a monastery in Romania. The film tells the story of Pastor Burke (Demian Bichir) and a young nun named Irene (Taissa Farmiga) who are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a nun, which leads them to the origin story of Valak. Although released in 2018, THE NUN is the beginning of the narrative in THE CONJURING franchise.

2. ANNABELLE: CREATION (2017)

ANNABELLE: CREATION, set in 1955, is a prequel to the 2014 film ANNABELLE and also a prequel to THE CONJURING. The film tells the origin story of how the doll named Annabelle was created and possessed by a demon. It is portrayed by a doll maker named Samuel Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife (Miranda Otto).

3. THE NUN 2 (2023)

After 4 years of the events in THE NUN, which took place in 1956, THE NUN 2 will continue the story of Taissa Farmiga as the young nun named Irene who faces Valak again after teaching at a secluded boarding school in rural France.

4. ANNABELLE (2014)

Set in 1967, ANNABELLE tells the story of a young couple, a doctor who gifts his wife the Annabelle doll and then experiences tragedy after the arrival of that unusual doll in their home. They leave the doll behind and move to a different apartment.

5. THE CONJURING (2013)

Although released earlier, THE CONJURING serves as the beginning of The Conjuring Universe developed by James Wan. This film introduces the characters Annabelle and Valak for the first time. Set in 1971, THE CONJURING focuses on Ed and Lorraine Warren who help the Perron family confront demonic disturbances caused by the Annabelle doll in their home. 

6. ANNABELLE: COMES HOME (2019)

ANNABELLE: COMES HOME, set in 1972, depicts the events immediately after the Warren family acquires Annabelle in the first Conjuring film. They investigate the dangers of having the doll in their home. Annabelle returns to terrorize the Warren family along with many other spirits and demons from the artifact room. These events take place while the Warren family is away.

7. THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA (2019)

Although this film is not produced by the Franchise team of The Conjuring Universe, it still features a few Warren family scenes. THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA tells the story of a widow, Anna Garcia (Linda Cardellini), who becomes the target of a vengeful spirit that also endangers her child. A priest who appears in this film also plays a role in Annabelle. Nevertheless, despite this connection, THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA feels like a standalone film.

8. THE CONJURING 2 (2016)

Set in 1977, the storyline of THE CONJURING 2 follows the Warren family as they embark on a journey to London to help a family in Enfield, while also actively investigating the Amityville murders. The connection between THE CONJURING 2 and THE NUN is quite significant, as Valak becomes the main demon they face in this film.

9. THE CONJURING 3: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT (2021)

This film is set in the 80s with a horrifying story based on the real-life trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claimed to be 'possessed by a demon' after killing his landlord. The Warren family is involved in this case to help Arne. THE CONJURING 3 features the figure of Valak through a photo. There is also a satanic worship ritual depicted in the first two ANNABELLE films.
