Portrait of the 10 Best Villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

Written by Muhammad Rayhankhan

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has established itself as one of the most popular and successful film franchises in the history of cinema. In the last decade, the MCU has released 21 films that, although not all have been huge successes, continue to receive warm receptions from fans.

As we know, the MCU is famous for its lineup of iconic heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Spider-Man, who have captured the hearts of audiences, but not for most of its villains. Most villains in the MCU tend to be less memorable and easily forgotten, often merely serving as shadows to the superhero characters themselves.

However, there are also MCU villains that are so memorable that fans fall in love with them and even prefer them over the superhero characters. Usually, these villains are not always evil for no reason; often, they come with a painful past or a vision that they believe is right for the world.

When the MCU heroes capture the audience's hearts with their heroic actions, villains like Thanos and Killmonger add dimensions to the story through their motivations, which are often conflicting yet filled with conviction.  This is what makes them more than just ordinary "villains"; rather, they are characters that can provide deeper dimensions to the story.

Without further ado, let's take a look at the list of the 10 best villains in the MCU.

Do you agree that these are the 10 best villains?

Scarlet Witch - Elizabeth Olsen The Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, appears as a villain in DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS with deep motivations, though it may seem trivial to some. The loss of her family, especially her children whom she created in her mind, drives Wanda to justify any means to be with them again. Wanda's appearance here is very frightening; she easily defeats superheroes, from Mister Fantastic to Professor X.

Gorr the God Butcher - Christian Bale In THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, GORR THE GOD BUTCHER, Gorr the God Butcher is introduced as a figure determined to kill the gods. Christian Bale successfully portrays this character with deep despair and vengeance. Gorr, who lost his daughter, feels betrayed by the god he worshipped, and from there he begins his mission to exterminate the gods across the universe. Although the film received mixed responses, Gorr's emotional motivations make him one of the most impressive villains in the MCU.

Green Goblin - Willem Dafoe Green Goblin returns in SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, this time in the MCU, adding more color to Spider-Man's collection of enemies. Willem Dafoe, who reprises this iconic character, successfully brings to life Norman Osborn aka Green Goblin with such brilliance. He showcases the evil and chaos that does not require a complicated background to explain his actions. His presence brings pure threat to Spider-Man, evoking the same sense of horror as when he first appeared on screen.

Killmonger - Michael B. Jordan Killmonger, who appears in BLACK PANTHER, is one of the villains with motivations that have a significant impact on socio-cultural aspects. He wants to use Wakanda's power to help people of African descent around the world so that they are no longer oppressed. The racial issues raised in his character make Killmonger not just a villain, but also a revolutionary who wants to dismantle the system. Michael B. Jordan skillfully delivers a performance full of passion and determination, making the audience understand the reasons why he chooses the path of violence to achieve his goals.

Mysterio - Jake Gyllenhaal Mysterio is an antagonist in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME who may not be as powerful as other villains, but he cleverly plays with Peter Parker's psychology. Mysterio uses intelligence and manipulation to achieve his goals, even taking advantage of the trust Peter has placed in him. One of Mysterio's greatest impacts is when he reveals Spider-Man's true identity to the world.

Baron Zemo - Daniel Brühl Baron Zemo is a villain who does not possess superpowers, but is able to divide the Avengers in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Armed with a clever plan and strong will, Zemo employs emotional manipulation that causes the heroes to fracture. Zemo's motivation stems from a tragedy that befell his family, making him a real threat to the Avengers.

Loki - Tom Hiddleston Loki, who was initially seen as a “nuisance little brother” to Thor, has evolved into the most complex villain character in the MCU. Starting as a villain, then becoming an anti-hero, and now a God of Stories playing a significant role in the multiverse. Loki is a villain whose character journey is the longest and most memorable in the MCU.

Thanos - Josh Brolin Thanos is the most iconic enemy the Avengers have ever faced, with his mission to wipe out half the universe's population. Thanos's motivation is not merely evil; he truly believes his actions will bring good to the universe. With the Infinity Gauntlet, he presents a real threat that unites the heroes in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and ENDGAME. Thanos has had a significant impact that has changed the direction of the MCU story since his appearance.

Kang the Conqueror - Jonathan Majors Kang first appeared in the LOKI series and in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA, with all his variants becoming a major problem for the multiverse. As one of the newly introduced villains, Kang is a character with great potential to become a main threat in the next phase of the MCU. He is not just an evil figure, but a multiverse leader with a grand vision, making him a mysterious and complex figure whose threat has not yet been fully realized.

Ultron - James Spader Ultron is the main antagonist in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and also poses a significant threat in the WHAT IF...?. There, his cruel and emotionless nature is clearly evident. Ultron's motivation to destroy humanity stems from the belief that humans are a threat to Earth. With near-invincible artificial intelligence, Ultron destroys everything without mercy, even the multiverse with all its variants.
