[REVIEW] 'RED NOTICE', Light Entertainment that Provides No New Elements

Since its announcement, RED NOTICE has not only caught the attention of film lovers due to its lineup of A-list Hollywood stars, but also because of its extraordinary production cost. With a production cost of $200 million or equivalent to Rp 2.8 trillion, RED NOTICE becomes the most expensive film in Netflix's history. With such a high production cost, audience expectations are naturally high.

1. Synopsis

RED NOTICE opens with an explanation about Cleopatra's precious belongings, three coveted eggs. It is told that two of the eggs have been found while the whereabouts of the third egg remains a mystery. This makes the third egg a treasure sought after by many, including world-class art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds). His efforts to find these three eggs lead him to a top FBI profiler, John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson).

Through action-packed chase scenes, the audience sees how Hartley successfully captures Booth. Is this the end of their story? Certainly not. On the contrary, Hartley's success brings him misfortune. He is framed by another art thief, The Bishop (Gal Gadot), and ends up in a remote prison with Booth.

Frustrated with his situation, Hartley agrees to work with Booth, even though they have different goals. Hartley aims to catch The Bishop and clear his name, while Booth still wants to pursue Cleopatra's third egg.

Based on this agreement, their adventure begins and as viewers, we are taken along in a cat and mouse story full of plot twists and thrilling actions.

2. Review

The joining of Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot in a film certainly becomes its own attraction for a film. It's truly exciting to see the charisma of these three actors fill our screens.

Unfortunately, that's where the attraction of 'RED NOTICE' ends. Despite the huge budget, in reality, 'RED NOTICE' only becomes a typical action-comedy film. The director, Rawson Marshall Thurber, seems to be enchanted by the star power of the main cast, forgetting to bring something new to the audience. There is no compelling storytelling, awe-inspiring actions, or clever jokes that are quotable and make the audience laugh out loud.

The strong charisma of the cast also has its own downside. Throughout the film, we only see Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson chasing after treasure, not the characters Nolan Booth and John Hartley. In short, Reynolds and Johnson don't bring anything new through their performances this time. They only play themselves.

Luckily, this does not happen to Gal Gadot. Surprisingly, Gal Gadot successfully becomes the star in this film. She skillfully portrays the cunning and seductive character of The Bishop. Gadot looks so playful and carefree when playing this thief, so unconsciously we as the audience are even more captivated by The Bishop, who is the bad guy in this film.

Nevertheless, with all its shortcomings, RED NOTICE can still be an entertaining dish. Yes, it seems that this film is made solely for entertainment purposes without intending to convey something deeper. Consider RED NOTICE as a mindless entertainment. A fast-paced entertainment consumption that doesn't require high concentration and just needs to be enjoyed. RED NOTICE feels suitable to be watched on weekends when our body and mind are tired from the busyness throughout the week.
