The name Napoleon Bonaparte must be familiar to you. He is one of the best French war generals who managed to defeat his opponents with various clever strategies.

His story is now brought to the big screen, written by David Scarpa and directed by Ridley Scott, titled Napoleon. This film is the 28th film by the 86-year-old British director.

This film tells the history and origin of Napoleon Bonaparte, the iconic French general during the French Revolution in 1793, and stars Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix. For those of you who are curious about the storyline, let's check out the synopsis below!

1. During the Revolution, Vacancy Emerged in the French Government

The story begins during the French Revolution. In 1793, thousands of anti-royalist French gathered at the Place de la Revolution in Paris and witnessed Marie Antoinette (Catherine Walker) walking desolately among them.

Antoinette walked looking desolate after being sentenced to death, namely beheaded for being considered a traitor to the people. Not only her, her husband Louis XVI was also sentenced to execution by the public. With both of them beheaded during the revolution, a vacancy emerged in the French government.

Meanwhile, young Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) was given the opportunity to conquer the Toulon region, which was then ruled by the British. Napoleon achieved a great victory in the port city and was awarded the title of Brigadier General.

He obtained this title at a young age. One time, while attending an officer's dinner, Napoleon was attracted to the appearance of Josephine de Beauharnais (played by Vanessa Kirby). Josephine was a young and beautiful widow. This meeting made their relationship grow closer. They decided to get married and live together in love.

However, in his love-filled life, Napoleon also harbored military ambitions and aimed to conquer several European territories. In the midst of these ambitions, Napoleon heard rumors of Josephine's infidelity. The rumors surfaced while Napoleon was leading his troops in Egypt and achieving victory. Once the war was over, Napoleon immediately began investigating the rumors of Josephine's affair.

Family and love issues made Napoleon appear neglectful in managing the military. Some members of the Central Committee believed that Napoleon was attempting to defect and betray France. This rumor infuriated Napoleon. In 1798, he decided to launch a coup d'état and successfully ascended to the position of First Consul, becoming the highest leader of the French government.

This clearly did not satisfy Napoleon. His ambition grew and he wanted to obtain the title of emperor and rule over all of France and the conquered territories. This ambition was realized in 1804, when he was appointed as the Emperor of France, accompanied by Josephine as his empress. However, in the process of achieving his ultimate dream, Napoleon faced emotional problems again, this time he had to face difficult choices.
