Millie Wilson, a primary school English teacher, moves to the countryside with her boyfriend, Tim Brassington, who has become emotionally closed off since the death of his parents. Before the move, Millie proposed to Tim at a farewell party, but Tim hesitated to respond, embarrassing Millie in front of her friends.
Their new life begins with awkward feelings and an increasingly palpable emotional distance. This strained relationship slowly leads to events they never imagined before.
While hiking near their new home, they fall into a cave during the rain and decide to spend the night there. Tim drinks water from a pool in the cave and recalls the traumatic night when he found his mother with his father's decaying body.
The next day, they discover that part of their legs are fused together, but they ignore it after separating them. Soon, Tim experiences an uncontrollable physical pull towards Millie, leaving both of them feeling confused.

Millie learns that Jamie is the result of the fusion of two humans in an ancient ritual believed to bring happiness. Jamie tries to force them to "become whole," but Millie escapes.
