True Story of the Director Inspires the Touching Story of Disney and Pixar's Film, 'ONWARD'

Dan Scanlon, the director of the film ONWARD, who is also a veteran creative team member at Pixar and was previously involved in the making of MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, was inspired to make an animated film based on his personal story with his brother after the departure of their father.

1. Search for a Father

And Scanlon lost a father in 1977, when he was not even 1 year old. Neither he nor his older brother ever knew their father's figure. 

Until both of them tried to find out by collecting various information from photos, stories, and recordings they had. 

2. Synopsis of ONWARD

ONWARD is an animated film by Disney and Pixar that tells the story of the adventure of siblings, Barley (Chris Pratt) and Ian Lightfoot (Tom Holland), in search of remnants of magic in the world to meet their deceased father. 

The journey of the two brothers in this search encounters various unique things and events. And it ends with a special moment between Barley and Ian. 

3. Recording of Father's Voice

There are several touching scenes in the movie ONWARD. One of them that may resonate with the audience is when Ian Lightfoot plays the recording of his father's voice and has a conversation with it.

This moment is inspired by Scanlon and his brother's experience. When they were young, they felt like they discovered a miracle when they found a recording of their father's voice. In the recording, their father only said two words, 'hi' and 'bye'. However, this experience was precious to Scanlon because through the recording, he could hear his father's voice for the first time. 

4. Inspirational Mother Figure in ONWARD

This film also introduces an inspirational mother figure who has many messages. Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the mother of Barley and Ian, is a very strong person. She doesn't want to be consumed by sadness and tries her best to raise her two sons. 

Laurel is also inspired by Dan Scanlon's mother. According to Dan, his mother is an amazing woman who always taught him and his brother to be strong and to appreciate everything. 

"My mother did it incredibly. We all know that she also felt sad. However, I am very proud of her because in the midst of her sadness, she still tried to be strong and raised both of us very well," Dan Scanlon shared.

According to Scanlon, his memories while making the movie ONWARD became a special and emotional moment for him and his father.
