There are 10,689,968 people who use the name Kim spread across Korea, with the majority coming from Gyeonggi-do and Seoul.
Next in line is the surname Lee, with 7,307,237 families using it and distributed throughout Korea, with Gyeonggi-do being the region that uses this name the most. Park is the next most frequently used surname, with a total of 4,192,080 families. Then followed by Jung and Choi, with a combined total of over 2 million families across Korea.
In contrast to the frequently used surnames Kim, Lee, Park, Jung, and Choi, this list of surnames becomes the least frequently found in Korea. The surname Hwangmok is the least used surname with only 5 families in total.
Besides Hwangmok, the surname Wan is also rarely used, with only 6 families in total. Followed by Eogeum, San, Ban, Mangjeol, Ta, Nahn, and Deungjeong, which have less than 10 families using those surnames.
So, out of the total population of over 50 million in South Korea, 45% of Koreans actually use the surnames Kim, Lee, and Park the most.
