NCT was created to form a new male vocal group that aligns with their "cultural content" strategy, where different teams will debut in various countries around the world.
That's why NCT has many members, and it might continue to grow. That's why NCT is one of the K-Pop groups that has many sub-units and various cool projects. Not only group projects, but also duos and singles. After undergoing training, NCT U was formed in 2016 with 6 members, and it has continued until now with a total of 23 members.

At the beginning of their debut, NCT already formed a sub-group called NCT U. This sub-group had 6 initial members in April 2016. Then, in the same year, specifically in July 2016, another sub-group called NCT 127 was created. NCT 127 consists of 7 members with a slightly stronger concept.
Then, on August 8th, SM Entertainment announced the third unit of NCT, which is NCT Dream, consisting of 7 members. So, in total, in 2016, NCT had 15 members. After that, in 2017, NCT 127 added 2 new members. Therefore, in 2017, the total number of NCT members was 17.

NCT U is a sub unit of NCT. The letter U stands for United. This group does not have permanent members, as it depends on the concept that will be created, usually new members will be included in NCT U before finally joining other sub units. NCT U made their debut with the songs 'The 7th Sense' and 'Without You' in April 2016.
At the beginning of their debut, NCT U members were only Taeil NCT, Jaehyun NCT, Taeyong NCT, Mark NCT, Ten NCT, and Doyoung NCT. Then this sub unit made a comeback in February 2018, releasing the single 'BOSS'. At that time, NCT U members changed to Taeyong NCT, Jaehyun NCT, Doyoung NCT, Mark NCT, Winwin NCT, Lucas NCT, and Jungwoo NCT.
In their latest album released in 2020, 'RESONANCE Pt.1', NCT U members Taeyong NCT, Doyoung NCT, Jaehyun NCT, Lucas NCT, Xiaojun NCT, Jaemin NCT, and Shotaro NCT sang the song 'Make A Wish (Birthday Song)'. At that time, Shotaro NCT and Sungchan NCT also became new members who joined NCT.

Next is the subunit NCT 127, which is the second subunit of NCT. Since NCT 127 is based in Seoul, South Korea, this subunit is given the additional name 127, taken from the coordinates of Seoul city. NCT 127 made their debut with Fire Truck in July 2016. At the beginning of their debut, they consisted of only 7 members, namely Taeyong NCT, Taeil NCT, Yuta NCT, Jaehyun NCT, Winwin NCT, Mark NCT, and Haechan NCT.
After that, Doyoung NCT and Johnny NCT joined NCT 127 on December 27, 2016. Then, Jungwoo NCT joined on September 17, 2018. The concept of NCT 127 is also different from NCT Dream, as the members of NCT 127 are seniors in the NCT group who are above 20 years old, so their concept is slightly stronger.

And the last sub-unit that NCT had at that time is WayV. Different from the other groups, this sub-unit WayV is based in China, so WayV focuses on releasing songs in Mandarin. WayV members themselves include Lucas NCT, Winwin NCT, Kun NCT, Ten NCT, Hendery NCT, XiaoJun NCT, and YangYang NCT.
This sub-unit made their debut under the exclusive China label of SM Entertainment, which is Label V. WayV made their debut on January 17, 2019, by releasing NCT 127's single titled Regular, with the lyrics changed to Mandarin. Then in January 2019, WayV released their latest song titled The Vision, and in May 2019, they released their first mini album titled Take Off.
