Dimas Danang is Allowed, Galabby is Happy to be Involved in the Musical 'Mar' to Preserve the Works of Ismail Marzuki

"I am excited because I love Ismail Marzuki's songs, they are beautiful. And when I found out my partner is Gabriel Harvianto, wow, I am even more enthusiastic," said Galabby Thahira when met in the Kebayoran Baru area, South Jakarta, on Monday (17/2/2025).

1. Long-time Acquaintance with Gabriel Harvianto

Getting the lead role alongside Gabriel Harvianto makes Galabby feel more confident. The reason is that they have known each other for a long time.

"Mas Gabriel has been my vocal teacher since I was little. So I already know what he is like, and I want to share the stage with him," she said.

Since she is used to singing Ismail Marzuki's songs, Galabby finds the rehearsal process for this musical to be easier.

"Coincidentally, I like singing the song Juwita Malam. The melody is very beautiful. Then being involved in this musical, I don't find it too difficult because there are many songs I already know," she explained.

Interestingly, in this musical, there are several scenes that require Galabby to build chemistry with Gabriel Harvianto. However, this is not an issue for her husband, Dimas Danang.

"Danang is very relaxed and fully supports all my activities. I'm happy to have a husband like him," said Galabby Thahira.

Gabriel also admitted that he had asked for permission from Danang because there are some rather intimate scenes in this musical.

"I already know him and I asked Danang for permission because I needed to build chemistry with Galabby. Then there are some intimate moments between us like a couple. Danang said to just relax, so I got his permission," added Gabriel Harvianto.

3. The Love Story of Ismail Marzuki in the Musical 'Mar'

The musical Mar tells the love story of Ismail Marzuki and Aryati, the figure who inspired the song titled Aryati.

"This musical tells the story of what if Ismail Marzuki met, dated, and married Aryati. The song Aryati was created for someone named Aryati. The theme is love set against the backdrop of the Bandung Sea of Fire event in 1946," explained Gabriel Harvianto.

In this musical, Gabriel plays the character Mar, who has a deep love for two things: his country and Aryati.

"As Mar, this is a feeling of love for two things; for Mar, love for the country and Aryati, both are Mar's eternal love until the end of his life. In his mind, it is only for the country and Aryati," he added.

To ensure the performance goes smoothly, Gabriel and Galabby have undergone intensive training for 3.5 months. They practice every day to convey the right emotions in the upcoming performance.

The musical Mar itself will be held at Ciputra Artpreneur, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on February 26-28, 2025. Gabriel hopes this musical can inspire the younger generation to better understand and love the works of Ismail Marzuki.

"I want to introduce to the younger generation that we have had masterpieces from Ismail Marzuki since the 1940s that are on par with the West. The melodies are hard to conquer; we only just learned the melodies here. Yes, hopefully the musical drama Mar can be an inspiration for young people," said Gabriel Harvianto.
