Haruomi Hosono Presents 'Sincerely', New Single About Sincerity

Yours Sincerely is scheduled to be released on September 11, 2026, through Ghostly International. Previously, Hosono introduced this project with the single Note of Mothership, then continued the narrative of his album through Sincerely, which reflects the idea of sincerity and unconditional love.

During about two years of working on the album, Hosono sought to translate Japanese concepts such as omoiyari, jihi, and boseiai into English. He considered the word compassion, but felt that its nuance did not fully capture the meaning of omoiyari, which, in Japanese culture, is not only related to empathy towards suffering but also the ability to feel the happiness of others.

"I chose not to use ‘compassion’. Instead, I turned to a word that is more familiar and often used to close a letter titled Sincerely," said Hosono.

This idea was brought back into the musical realm with a personal approach. Sincerely incorporates the vibes of 1950s American music, a period that also shaped his musical journey, but it does not merely revive old colors. Hosono uses that framework to explore the most basic meaning of the word sincerely, something that comes from the heart, which he then poured into lyrics in Japanese.

The impact of his work continues to resonate with the current generation. Several musicians such as Mac DeMarco, Ginger Root, Vampire Weekend, Cameron Winter, and even Harry Styles have cited Hosono's work as an important inspiration in their creative processes.

Harry Styles even drew inspiration from the album HOSONO HOUSE (1973) when naming his album released in 2022, Harry’s House. Meanwhile, Mac DeMarco has openly referred to Hosono as one of his heroes.
