LMKN Requires Musicians to Join LMK to Cash Out Royalties

Good news comes for the players in the Indonesian music industry. The National Collective Management Institution (LMKN) has just announced the existence of an unclaimed royalty fund amounting to 33 billion rupiah that is ready to be distributed. However, there are specific requirements that musicians must meet if they want to cash in on their rights.

LMKN Commissioner, Ahmad Ali Fahmi and Marcell Siahaan, firmly stated that the royalty distribution process must go through a Collective Management Institution (LMK). This means that musicians who wish to claim this unclaimed royalty will be directed to register as members of the LMK first.

"The claiming process has a claim mechanism that can be accessed by everyone, but for subsequent claims, we will direct them to become LMK members. That’s it, because only LMK can actually distribute it later," said Ahmad Ali Fahmi when met in the Kuningan area, South Jakarta, Tuesday (03/03/2026).

The background of this policy is based on the rules of the game in the music royalty ecosystem, where LMK plays a crucial role as a bridge between LMKN and copyright holders. Without membership in LMK, the process of royalty distribution cannot be carried out technically and legally.

"Yes, we will guide this. We will direct every rights holder to become a member of LMK. We will guide them like that," added Marcell Siahaan to emphasize.

Marcell added that the announcement of unclaimed royalties is a form of LMKN's commitment to uphold transparency and integrity. He wants to ensure that every artist knows that there are their rights stored and can be claimed.

"Because we feel that there are so many rights that are unclaimed, and we need to announce it so that people know that, 'Oh, I have rights here,' and they can claim it now," said the singer of the song Firasat.

In addition to distribution issues, LMKN is also continuously improving in terms of technology. Marcell mentioned that the digitization of the licensing system is going very well and makes it easier for music users to manage permits, especially for live events.
