So Relatable! The Story Behind the Song

The duet of Betrand Peto and Anggis through the song "Percuma" has successfully captured public attention. This breakup-themed song is not only touching because of its lyrics and pop ballad arrangement, but also due to the emotional closeness of both singers to the song's content. In the KLshow program that aired recently on KapanLagi.com, Betrand and Anggis revealed the story behind the creative process and personal experiences that made this song feel so relatable.

Anggis revealed that she once experienced a relationship similar to the content of the song "Percuma." She admitted to deliberately revisiting old memories to perform the song with deep emotion. "I kind of re-call all the moments I've experienced to get that sadness back. But back then, now I'm happy. Life must go on," she said.

Meanwhile, Betrand explained that although he personally did not experience a story like in the song, he felt very helped because the pop ballad genre was very familiar to him. This made the singing process feel more natural. However, challenges still existed during the recording process due to the difference in vocal characters between him and Anggis. He mentioned that several pitch adjustments were needed for their voices to harmonize. In fact, the recording process had to be done twice in one day to achieve the best results.

Their collaboration began from Betrand's initiative. He revealed that he was the first to propose the idea of dueting with Anggis. Their meeting happened accidentally while both were attending a workshop session at the same label studio. From there, Betrand started to get to know Anggis's vocal character and personality, and immediately felt a connection. "I saw Kak Anggis was actually a fun person. And his voice is also good. Wow, I smiled," he recalled while laughing.

Some time later, when the producer asked who the female singer he wanted to duet with was, Betrand confidently mentioned Anggis as his first choice. In addition, he also considered Nabila as a duet partner for the next project. However, for the song "Percuma", he wanted to focus on developing the collaboration with Anggis first.

Interestingly, initially Betrand and Anggis intended to write the lyrics for this song themselves. They went through several workshop sessions together but had difficulty finding the right direction. Eventually, their producer, Uncle Sefri, suggested that the lyrics be written by the talented singer and songwriter, Mahalini. Both agreed happily, as they felt the lyrics provided were very fitting with the concept they wanted.

Not only Mahalini, Kamga is also involved in the creative process of this song. Kamga's presence adds strength to the structure and emotion of the song, providing depth to every verse sung. Although Betrand and Anggis did not write the lyrics directly, they still add their own color in vocal interpretation and the division of parts in the song.

One of the biggest challenges in the recording process is finding a comfortable middle tone for both vocals. Anggis's voice character as a female singer with a high range, and Betrand's voice which has changed as a male singer, makes them have to compromise in determining the right tone. This process becomes an important part of their collaboration and makes the final result sound so solid.

The song "Percuma" has finally become more than just a heartbroken song. Behind the poignant lyrics and melody lies a story about initiative, collaboration, and a long process full of compromises. The collaboration between Betrand Peto and Anggis proves that with seriousness and strong chemistry, a song can be very personal yet still relevant to many people.
