Tempo Music Investments is suing Miley Cyrus along with her songwriter for alleged plagiarism of a song by Bruno Mars. This news comes seven months after Miley Cyrus brought home her first 2 Grammy awards, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. She previously shared insights about the process of creating the song and her inspiration. Quoting from British Vogue, Miley Cyrus stated that she wrote the song Flowers in a very different way.

The song created by Miley Cyrus titled Flowers is her hit single from 2023. She is being sued on the grounds that the song Flowers copies several parts from the song When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars from 2013.

It should be emphasized that Bruno Mars is not the plaintiff in this case. Tempo Music owns part of the rights to When I Was Your Man which was purchased from songwriter Philip Lawrence. Tempo Music is seeking damages in an amount to be determined during the trial and is prohibiting Miley Cyrus from reproducing, distributing, and publicly performing the song Flowers.
The lawsuit also states that Flowers duplicates many elements of melody, harmony, and lyrics from When I Was Your Man. Flowers would not exist without When I Was Your Man. Miley Cyrus, Gregory Hein, and Michael Pollack as the songwriters of Flowers have created a derivative work without permission.

Several major companies such as Sony Music Publishing, Apple, Target, and Walmart are also implicated in this lawsuit. These companies are accused of being involved in the distribution of the song Flowers.
