In an interview with Lifehacker, he shares three common mistakes in washing white clothes along with tips to avoid them.

1. Using Chlorine-Based Bleach

When it comes to washing clothes, many people immediately think that bleach is the hero for making white clothes shine.

However, there is another side to consider: bleach can damage fabric fibers and, ironically, can make your laundry appear more yellow than white.

"To restore the brightness of linens or white towels that have become stained and dull, the best method is to soak them in warm water with detergent, then use sodium-based bleach," Edelman states, providing a smart solution for your laundry issues!

2. Not Soaking Clothes Immediately After Staining

Not all stains are immediately visible on clean white sheets.

"Transparent stains like sunscreen, white wine, and glue may seem invisible on your furniture or white towels, but they are actually sugar stains that will turn into caramel over time," Edelman explains.

This is why napkins or towels can appear white after washing and storing, only to suddenly look yellow when taken out.

To avoid this situation, Edelman advises that you always soak or treat white linens immediately after a spill, even if the stain isn't visible.

3. Considering White as the Absence of Color

One thing to remember is that white is not a color that lacks color. "Many people think that white fabric is essentially colorless," explains Edelman.

"In fact, white textiles are also dyed white and can fade like other colors." Therefore, it is very important not to mix white fabrics with other colors when washing.
