Commemorating International Fact-Checking Day, Liputan6 Holds 'Gathering Facts' and Launches Pocket Book to Combat Hoaxes

Kapanlagi.com - In order to commemorate International Fact-Checking Day, which falls on April 2, 2024, Liputan6.com held an event called 'Kumpul Fakta'. On this occasion, the fact-checking activists who have been members of the Liputan6.com fact-checking group on WhatsApp were present.

'Kumpul Fakta' was held at the Liputan6.com office and it was exciting. It was opened by the Editor-in-Chief of Liputan6.com, Elin Yunita Kristanti. In addition to being a friendly gathering among fellow fact-checking activists, there was also a special discussion or talk show on topics related to fact-checking and literacy.

What made it even more exciting was that this event was filled with prizes. Some fact-checking activists were able to bring home e-money balances, air fryers, and even earbuds.

During this event, Liputan6.com also launched a pocket-sized fact-checking book called 'Pemberantas Hoaks', special edition 2024, which can be accessed directly on smartphones. This pocket book is expected to improve understanding and anticipate the widespread circulation of hoaxes in the digital space.

In addition to the fact-checking activists, this event was also attended by fellow students from several universities such as Univ.Prof.Dr. Moestopo Jakarta, Univ.Djuanda Bogor, and Fact Checker Univ.Indonesia.

"I remember the theory of Post Truth, which is lies disguised as truth. Why can it disguise? Because we predominantly use emotions rather than thoughts. That's why hoaxes and hate speech thrive in areas that enjoy drama. Our society and we love drama, making it easy to be manipulated by hoaxes," said Chief Content Officer of Kapanlagi Youniverse (KLY), Wenseslaus Manggut in his speech.

Wens stated that the biggest weakness in combating hoaxes is that humans rely too much on emotions rather than thoughts to take action.

According to Wens, hoaxes and misinformation move through small spaces, they come secretly into our personal space and then onto our phone screens, influencing our emotions.

1. Not Stopping at Clarification and Literacy

Therefore, according to Wens, Liputan6.com initiates the eradication of hoaxes not only through clarification and literacy but it must also enter the movement.

"The eradication of hoaxes must become a collective movement because we have communities like this, because we want more people to be involved in combating hoaxes," he said.

This activity ended with a breaking of fast with guests from fact-checking activists and Liputan6.com employees at Kapanlagi Youniverse.
