Innovation of Malang State University Launches AI Research - Helps Students Write Theses Faster

Kapanlagi.com - Writing a thesis or scientific article in English is often a major challenge for Indonesian students. Many struggle to understand the academic writing style, how to structure their writing, and strategies for writing according to international publication standards.

As a result, many students end up delaying graduation and finding it difficult to publish in reputable journals. So, what if there was technology that could make all this process easier?

From this issue, the research team from Malang State University (UM) is developing an adaptive AI-based academic writing model focused on genre. This project is led by Prof. Anik Nunuk Wulyani and will run for two years, involving eight universities from Aceh to Papua. According to Prof. Anik, the weaknesses of students are not only about language but also understanding academic genres, such as how to create an introduction, write a literature review, or present research results. "AI enables more personalized learning. Students can receive feedback according to their weaknesses and needs. This way, the writing process becomes more directed and effective," he explained.

The research titled "Adaptive Research Writing Model Assisted by AI with a Genre-Based Approach for English Students in Indonesia" uses the Educational Design Research (EDR) method. The process is gradual, starting from needs analysis, designing prototypes, expert validation, to direct testing in the classroom. It is hoped that the final result of this research can produce an adaptive learning model based on AI that is ready to be widely used in various campuses.

In addition to the model prototype, the research team, which also consists of Professor Yazid Basthomi, Maria Hidayati, M.Pd., Ed.D., and two doctoral students from UM, Mala Rovikasari, M.Pd. and Falentinus Ndruru, S.Pd., M.Li., aims for publication in reputable international journals (Scopus Q1), international conference proceedings, and to prepare policy briefs for input on higher education policy. Furthermore, this project is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Cross-campus collaboration is expected to create an inclusive and innovative educational ecosystem. "We hope this research helps students graduate on time, improves the quality of publications, and strengthens Indonesia's position in the global academic world," added Prof. Anik.

If realized, this model could be a major breakthrough for national higher education and establish UM as a pioneering campus in the utilization of AI.
