In literal terms, riya means a term that originates from the word Arriyaa'u which means to show off or display. The meaning of riya is the act of displaying something good, whether it is a material possession or a good deed, with the intention of being seen by others or receiving praise.

In Islam, the act of riya itself is detested by Allah SWT, because the actions performed are not based solely on the intention of pleasing Allah SWT. Riya is a small form of shirk that can ruin worship and reduce rewards. Good deeds based on riya are not valued in the sight of Allah.

Another meaning of riya is an attitude that arises due to a lack of understanding of the purpose of the deeds and worship performed. Riya arises due to a lack of faith in Allah and the Day of Judgment, as well as dishonesty in carrying out religious commands. "The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk (polytheism)," and the companions asked, 'What is the lesser shirk?' He replied, 'Riya'."

2. Riya syirik

Riya syirik or riya intention is an action carried out with the intention of carrying out the command of Allah SWT, but also based on the intention of getting attention and praise from humans at the same time.
