Fasting itself is not just an act of restraining desire for food, fasting is an act of restraining all desires within oneself. Desires are not just about food, but also desires in thoughts, desires in actions, desires in behavior, desires in words, all of them are included in the act of fasting in Ramadan. Therefore, according to various sources, these are the things that make fasting in Ramadan become in vain.

1. Insincerity

The first thing that makes fasting in Ramadan in vain is feeling insincere. Insincerity here means that those who perform the fasting but not with a sincere heart. They perform the fasting without sincerity and not for the sake of Allah. In a hadith narrated by An-Nasai and Ibn Majah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reminded us about the many people whose fasting is in vain. And the verse says,

"How many people fast but get nothing from it except hunger," he said.

In this matter, we know that worship with a sincere heart will receive blessings and great rewards from Allah. Every human being on this earth performs the fasting together, at the same time, but no one knows the measure of the rewards. Only Allah knows which servant truly performs the worship with a sincere and sincere heart for His sake. This is also mentioned in a hadith that says,

"Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." (Muttafaq 'Alaih).

That's why worship with a pure and sincere heart will receive countless rewards from Allah. So don't make your fasting in vain, KLovers.

2. Ghibah

What makes fasting in Ramadan become in vain is gossiping. Ghibah is an activity of talking about the faults of others, and of course, this is something that can make our fasting in vain. Ghibah has the same value as speaking ill, cursing, and ridiculing, because it is done verbally.

In Islam, ghibah is likened to someone who eats the flesh of their deceased sibling. In Surah Al-Hujurat verse 12, Allah SWT says,

And do not backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

In this regard, we can understand that ghibah is something that is highly reprehensible, especially when we do it during the month of fasting. It will then become a futile act in performing the fasting worship by gossiping about fellow human beings.

3. Lying

Lying also falls under the category of things that render fasting in Ramadan useless. Lying or speaking falsehood is a reprehensible act that is prohibited in Islam. Lying also includes actions that can harm other human beings on this earth. In a hadith narrated by Bukhari no. 1903 from Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

"Whoever does not abandon lying and continues to practice it, Allah is not in need of the hunger and thirst that he endures."

As-Suyuthi explains that az zuur refers to speaking lies and slander, which means to defame. And practicing it means engaging in wicked acts, which are the consequences that Allah has forbidden. Therefore, if we engage in such behavior during the month of Ramadan, then our fasting will indeed be in vain.

4. Saying Lagwu (meaningless words) and Rofats (pornographic sentences)

Saying lagwu and rofats is something that makes fasting in Ramadan meaningless. In a hadith narrated by Ibn Maja, from Abu Hurairah, the Prophet said,

"Fasting is not only about refraining from eating and drinking. But fasting is also about refraining from saying lagwu and rofats. If someone insults you or annoys you, say to them, 'I am fasting, I am fasting.'"

That is why, saying things that are not beneficial and using pornographic sentences are not allowed during fasting. Not only during fasting, but also in daily life, such behavior is prohibited. And if we continue to do such things while fasting, then fasting will be in vain for you.

5. Being Stingy

One thing that makes fasting in Ramadan useless is being stingy. Ramadan is the perfect time for us to share and give sustenance to those in need. Because Allah has promised to replace the charity we give with something better. This will certainly be given if we do it sincerely for the sake of Allah. In a hadith narrated by Muslim, from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him, said,

"Every good deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied by 10 to 700 times its like. Allah, the Almighty, says (which means), 'Except for fasting, it is for Me and I will reward it. He gives up his desires and his food for My sake.'"

Therefore, if we are stingy with our wealth and do not give charity in the month of Ramadan, then surely the fasting they do is in vain.

6. Sowing Discord

And what makes fasting in Ramadan useless is sowing discord. The activity of sowing discord is spreading provocative rumors to divide both parties. In a hadith from Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad said,

"Indeed, those who like to incite will not enter paradise."

Indeed, from the above hadith, we can see how the Prophet Muhammad strongly warns that sowing discord is an act that is not approved by Allah SWT. And if we do such a thing while fasting in Ramadan, then our fasting will truly be in vain.

That is what makes fasting in Ramadan useless. In performing the fasting during this month of Ramadan, it is good for us to seek forgiveness from Allah SWT, ask for His approval, and always perform acts of worship sincerely. Avoid all actions that do not bring rewards and always do things that bring us closer to paradise. May all KLovers at home be kept away from things that can harm the fasting in Ramadan.
